From March 31, 2025, new UK recycling legislation known as Simpler Recycling will come into effect, changing how businesses and, eventually, households manage waste. The goal? To make recycling easier, more efficient, and more environmentally friendly.
The Simpler Recycling legislation introduces clearer waste separation rules for businesses, schools, hospitals, and eventually households. Here's how the timeline unfolds:
All businesses and organisations with 10 or more employees must separate recyclable materials—plastic, glass, metal, paper, and food waste—from general waste.
Food waste must be collected separately to ensure it is properly composted or processed.
Separate Collection of Waste Streams:
Workplaces must present the following waste types separately, in accordance with arrangements made with their waste collector:
Households will follow suit with weekly food waste collections and bi-weekly general waste pickups.
Dry recyclables, such as metal, glass, paper, and plastics can be placed in a single bin, simplifying the process.
Businesses with fewer than 10 employees will need to follow the same rules by this date.
Duty of Care:
All workplaces have a legal duty to present separated wastes in accordance with arrangements made with their waste collector. Non-compliance by the specified dates may result in a compliance notice from the Environment Agency.
This applies not only to businesses but also to landlords or facilities management companies presenting waste on behalf of waste producers.
Waste Collectors:
Waste collectors are also subject to legal requirements under this legislation. They must ensure that the separated waste streams are collected and processed appropriately.
At Advanced Disposables, we are committed to helping businesses transition smoothly to these new requirements. Our range of eco-friendly packaging solutions, such as Vegware compostable products, can be disposed of alongside food waste, simplifying your waste management process and ensuring compliance with the Simpler Recycling legislation.
